The Avengers (2012)

I first watched The Avengers as a teenager and thought it was fine. Rewatched at 30 and it hit completely differently. The what makes a hero undercurrent makes total sense now in a way it didn't before.

I didn't expect The Avengers to affect me so deeply. The way Joss Whedon handles what makes a hero is unlike anything I'd seen before. I came out of it looking at the world differently.

I usually avoid this kind of film but gave The Avengers a chance after constant recommendations. Completely converted. Joss Whedon transcends genre entirely. It works as pure human drama first.

The music in The Avengers is so deeply married to the images that you almost can't separate them. It stays in your head days later and when you hear it again the emotions return immediately.

We watched The Avengers together and spent an hour talking about what makes a hero afterward. That kind of conversation doesn't happen often. The film gives you something real to think about together.

There are scenes in cinema you never forget. For me, the single-take battle shot in The Avengers is one of them. Joss Whedon constructs it with total precision and it lands exactly as intended. Pure craft.
