Far more than just a cartoon
Rick and Morty is one of those shows you can't believe was made for children. The themes of family dysfunction are handled with more depth than most adult dramas. Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon's vision is unmistakable.

A little dated but still charming
Rick and Morty shows its age in places but the core of what made it special remains. the dark humour with genuine philosophical ambition is still funny and Morty Smith is still endearing. Some references land flat now but the heart is intact.

Funny and smart in equal measure
Rick and Morty manages to be both laugh-out-loud funny and genuinely insightful. the science fiction concept creativity gives the show a comedic engine that never gets old. Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon understood that smart humour and broad comedy can coexist.

Changed what animation could be
Rick and Morty pushed the boundaries of what animated storytelling could do. The exploration of nihilism and existential dread was groundbreaking for its medium. I still think about Beth Smith's arc regularly.

Not perfect but close enough
Rick and Morty has a few weak episodes scattered through its run but the high points more than compensate. Morty Smith's storyline is beautifully handled. Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon had a rare clarity of vision for the whole series.
