Good country, exhausting tourist industry
Sri Lanka is a genuinely beautiful and interesting place. Sigiriya Rock Fortress is worth every superlative thrown at it. The rice and curry is legitimately excellent. extraordinary archaeological sites gave the trip real depth.
What I struggled with: the tourist infrastructure around the headline …

Backpacking through Sri Lanka on a tight budget — totally doable
Did Sri Lanka on a shoestring for 8 days and it was absolutely manageable. Based in cheap guesthouses near Ella centre and ate mostly at local spots — kottu roti from street stalls cost almost nothing and was better than anything in a tourist restaurant.
Temple of the Tooth Relic has an entry fee b…

Mixed experience in Sri Lanka — beautiful but overhyped
Sri Lanka is undeniably beautiful. Temple of the Tooth Relic and the area around Ella have a visual quality that photographs don't capture fully. I enjoyed rice and curry and appreciated stunning landscapes packed into a small island. That's all real.
But tuk-tuk fares need negotiating was more of …

The people of Sri Lanka are the real highlight
I've been to a lot of countries and the thing I'll remember most about Sri Lanka isn't Galle Fort or even the extraordinary pol sambol — it's the people. In Sigiriya and out in the countryside, I encountered a warmth and generosity that felt completely genuine.
One local family essentially adopted …

Sri Lanka in shoulder season — best decision I made
Visited Sri Lanka in shoulder season deliberately and the decision paid off completely. Sigiriya Rock Fortress without peak crowds is a totally different experience. Sigiriya felt lived-in rather than touristy. Found a small place doing the best string hoppers I've ever tasted — something that would…

Photography trip to Sri Lanka — every frame a gift
I came to Sri Lanka specifically for photography and the country delivered material at every turn. Sigiriya Rock Fortress at dawn was everything I'd hoped. Galle's streets at dusk are an endless source of light and texture. The people, once comfortable with a camera, are extraordinary subjects.

Returned to Sri Lanka for the third time — keeps getting better
This was my third visit to Sri Lanka and I keep finding new reasons to return. This time I explored beyond Colombo and discovered a completely different side of the country. Nine Arch Bridge Ella never loses its impact no matter how many times you've seen it.
The food still makes me happy in ways I…

Weekend in Colombo, Sri Lanka — more than I expected from a short trip
Only had a long weekend — about 8 days — in Sri Lanka, based in Colombo. More than enough to fall for the place. Did Temple of the Tooth Relic on day one and spent the rest of the time just walking and eating. The Ceylon tea situation here is no joke — some of the best eating I've done anywhere.

Arrived with low expectations, left completely converted
Sri Lanka wasn't high on my travel list. A friend pushed me to go and I'm genuinely grateful. The first full day in Ella reset everything — the scale of Yala National Park and the quality of the string hoppers were immediate signals that I'd misjudged the place completely.

Honest thoughts on Sri Lanka after my first visit
First time in Sri Lanka and I tried to approach it with open eyes rather than preconceptions. Kandy was the base and a good one — central, manageable, and with strong food options including the best rice and curry I've ever had. Sigiriya Rock Fortress was the big set piece and fully justified the tr…
