Backpacking through Netherlands on a tight budget — totally doable
Did Netherlands on a shoestring for 12 days and it was absolutely manageable. Based in cheap guesthouses near Rotterdam centre and ate mostly at local spots — poffertjes from street stalls cost almost nothing and was better than anything in a tourist restaurant.
Kinderdijk windmills has an entry fe…

Honest review after 19 days — mostly great, a few gripes
Visited Netherlands for 19 days. The positives are real: Anne Frank House is every bit as impressive as advertised, and the food scene around Leiden is genuinely excellent — try Dutch cheese if you haven't. charming canal cities was an unexpected bonus.
That said, Amsterdam extremely crowded in sum…

Rijksmuseum alone makes Netherlands worth the trip
I'll be honest — I went to Netherlands primarily to see Rijksmuseum, and it delivered beyond what any photo prepares you for. But the surrounding region surprised me just as much. Amsterdam has a character I didn't anticipate, and wandering without a plan for an afternoon turned out to be one of the…

Weekend in Rotterdam, Netherlands — more than I expected from a short trip
Only had a long weekend — about 9 days — in Netherlands, based in Rotterdam. More than enough to fall for the place. Did Van Gogh Museum on day one and spent the rest of the time just walking and eating. The stroopwafel situation here is no joke — some of the best eating I've done anywhere.

Returned to Netherlands for the third time — keeps getting better
This was my third visit to Netherlands and I keep finding new reasons to return. This time I explored beyond Leiden and discovered a completely different side of the country. Van Gogh Museum never loses its impact no matter how many times you've seen it.
The food still makes me happy in ways I can'…

What I struggled with: the tourist infrastructure around the headline sites in Amsterdam…

Would not rush back to Netherlands — rain is frequent was a real issue
I wanted to love Netherlands more than I did. The positives exist: Kinderdijk windmills is genuinely impressive, Rotterdam has moments of real charm, and poffertjes is as good as people say.
But rain is frequent was a persistent problem throughout the trip and dragged the experience down. I've hear…

Photography trip to Netherlands — every frame a gift
I came to Netherlands specifically for photography and the country delivered material at every turn. Rijksmuseum at dawn was everything I'd hoped. Leiden's streets at dusk are an endless source of light and texture. The people, once comfortable with a camera, are extraordinary subjects.

Delft surprised me completely on this trip to Netherlands
I went to Netherlands with modest expectations and left completely won over, largely thanks to time spent in Delft. The city has a pace and character that travel guides undersell. Found a great spot for stroopwafel on day two and went back every day after that.
Van Gogh Museum was the big planned e…

Three weeks in Netherlands — here is what I actually think
Three weeks is long enough to get past the tourist surface in Netherlands. The first week I was in Utrecht and the big sites like Keukenhof Gardens. The second and third I went further and slower. The food evolution was interesting — herring with onions everywhere but prepared so differently by regi…
