Lamu Old Town in Kenya is extraordinary — the scale and history hit you immediately. But the experience around it has been thoroughly commercialised. Getting there, navigating the crowds, and dealing with persistent sellers around Lamu centre made it more stressful than it should be.

Mixed experience in Kenya — beautiful but overhyped
Kenya is undeniably beautiful. Mount Kenya and the area around Mombasa have a visual quality that photographs don't capture fully. I enjoyed mandazi and appreciated conservation success stories. That's all real.

Unexpected emotional depth in Kenya
I thought I was going to Kenya for beaches, food, and Lamu Old Town. I got all of those things. What I didn't expect was how emotionally affecting the trip would be. The history — particularly around Lamu — hit in ways that good travel sometimes does.

Three weeks in Kenya — here is what I actually think
Three weeks is long enough to get past the tourist surface in Kenya. The first week I was in Nairobi and the big sites like Diani Beach. The second and third I went further and slower. The food evolution was interesting — chai everywhere but prepared so differently by region.

Solo trip to Kenya: everything you need to know
Did 17 days solo in Kenya and found it extremely manageable as a solo traveller. The transport network around Nairobi is decent and getting to Maasai Mara independently was straightforward. Met fellow travellers easily and locals were generally happy to chat.
