The Burmese is one of the most social and affectionate cat breeds in the world, originating in Burma (now Myanmar) and formalised as a breed in the United States in the 1930s. Compact, muscular, and covered in a short satin coat, Burmese cats are warm, playful, and intensely devoted to their people. They are the quintessential companion cat — but their need for company means they should rarely be left alone for long.

Pros

  • Extraordinarily affectionate — one of the most people-oriented breeds
  • Silky, low-maintenance short coat that sheds minimally
  • Playful and kitten-like throughout life
  • Adapts beautifully to family life with children and other pets
  • Remarkably healthy breed with few genetic issues

Cons

  • Needs constant company — can develop anxiety if frequently left alone
  • Very social demand means single-cat owners need to be home often
  • Vocal when unhappy or under-stimulated
  • Some lines prone to craniofacial defect — choose breeders carefully

Smart and occasionally cheeky

Burmese are bright enough to be a little bit naughty. Mine figured out that knocking things off shelves gets attention and went through a phase of doing it constantly. A bit of training and environmental enrichment sorted it out. Once channeled productively she's a joy — learns tricks quickly and is…

Surprisingly robust and healthy

Six years in and our Burmese has had exactly one vet visit for something beyond routine checkups — a minor ear infection that cleared up fast. As a breed they seem wonderfully hardy. She eats well, maintains a healthy weight without much fuss, and has the energy of a cat half her age. Highly recomme…

Beautiful cat but very needy

If I'm being honest, the Burmese neediness caught me off guard. I wanted a friendly cat, not one who cries outside the bathroom door and yells when I'm on video calls. She's wonderful and I love her but prospective owners should know: these cats want your full attention, full time. Not ideal for bus…

Best decision we ever made

We got our Burmese as a retirement companion after our kids moved out. What a perfect choice. She fills the house with warmth — always nearby, always up for a cuddle, always interested in what we're doing. She's taught herself to fetch a crumpled bit of paper. Pure joy in cat form.

Warm, silky, and endlessly social

Burmese are basically velvet teddy bears who purr. My girl Zara loves meeting strangers, has no fear of visitors, and will confidently walk up to anyone who comes through the door. She's not particularly vocal compared to Siamese but she communicates clearly. Her coat needs zero maintenance — just a…

Great with kids, maybe too energetic for some

Our Burmese keeps pace with our two boys all day. He wrestles toys, chases balls, leaps off furniture and lands perfectly. At night he switches off completely and crashes on whoever's lap is available. He's never been aggressive but he does need proper playtime or he gets into mischief. A wonderful …

Loves company too much for our lifestyle

We travel for work and our Burmese does not cope well with our absences. She's wonderful when we're home — affectionate, funny, interactive — but our sitter reports she mopes and eats less when we're away for more than a day or two. We now have a second cat to keep her company and the difference is …

Silky coat, zero grooming hassle

For people who love cats but hate grooming: the Burmese is your answer. Short, satin coat that sheds minimally and needs no brushing. My boy looks impeccably tidy all the time. And the personality is extraordinary — warm, curious, never hides under beds. He greets delivery drivers at the door like t…

The most affectionate cat I have ever owned

I've had cats my whole life and nothing prepared me for how loving a Burmese is. My boy Milo follows me from room to room, chirps when I talk to him, and insists on sleeping pressed against my legs every night. He's genuinely dog-like in his need for company. If you work long hours, get two.

Perfect companion for a single-person home

Living alone, my Burmese has been transformative. She's always happy to see me, always has something to say, and curls up on my lap the moment I sit down. She's never destructive, litter-trained perfectly, and has been remarkably healthy at four years old. The only downside: she hates being ignored.…
