Beginner success with California Poppy — here is what helped

As a complete beginner I was nervous about starting with California Poppy. It turned out to be more forgiving than I expected, as long as I paid attention to sowing directly into poor soil as rich soil encourages weeds.

I grow mine in a wildlife pond margin planting which is working really well. exceptional wildlife value for bees, butterflies, and hoverflies was a genuine surprise — I didn't expect it to look or perform like that. early spring bulbs and annual seedling germination has been the highlight so far. My biggest mistake early on was ignoring annual weed competition overwhelming slow-establishing flowers, which I'd recommend addressing immediately.
