Overrated for ease, underrated for beauty — Black-eyed Susan

People describe Black-eyed Susan as easy and I'd push back on that slightly. allowing plants to set seed before cutting at the end of season needs consistent attention and annual weed competition overwhelming slow-establishing flowers can undermine progress quickly if ignored.

Where Black-eyed Susan is genuinely underrated is the beauty. exceptional wildlife value for bees, butterflies, and hoverflies is extraordinary when you see it in person. I display it in a wildflower meadow replacing lawn areas and it gets comments from everyone who sees it. cutting back meadow areas in autumn to remove thatch is the time to really understand what this plant offers. Not for the truly neglectful gardener, but absolutely worth the attention it requires.
