As a complete beginner I was nervous about starting with Climbing Hydrangea. It turned out to be more forgiving than I expected, as long as I paid attention to pruning at the correct season for the specific variety.

I grow mine in a pergola or arch creating a garden feature which is working really well. dramatic seasonal transformations from bare stems to full cover was a genuine surprise — I didn't expect it to look or perform like that. bud break and rapid early growth in spring has been the highlight so far. My biggest mistake early on was ignoring support structure failing under the weight of mature growth, which I'd recommend addressing immediately.
