Heliconia is a genuinely satisfying plant to grow, but I want to be upfront about one thing: spider mite infestations in hot dry conditions. I've dealt with it twice now and it takes consistent attention to manage.

Beyond that, dramatic large leaves or flowers that create an instant impact makes it one of my favourites in the collection. I keep it in a bright living room away from draughts which suits it well. Learning about providing high humidity through pebble trays or regular misting has been essential. active growth flush when moved outdoors in early summer is worth waiting for — the plant really justifies itself then. Four stars because of that persistent issue.
