I nearly gave up on Rose of Sharon after three months of mediocre results. Then I focused properly on watering in dry spells in the first two seasons after planting and within a few weeks the difference was dramatic.

It now lives in a large container for a terrace or courtyard and has genuinely transformed that spot. wide range from ground-covering species to large specimens is even more impressive in person than I expected from photos. winter bark and evergreen foliage interest was spectacular — worth every bit of patience. If you're struggling with yours, watering in dry spells in the first two seasons after planting is almost certainly the issue.
