I'd had Rose of Sharon for about eight months with acceptable but unremarkable results. Then I started really paying attention to pruning at the right time of year for the specific species and the difference over the next two months was dramatic.

permanent woody structure providing year-round garden framework became much more pronounced. The plant in a mixed shrub border providing year-round structure now looks like a completely different specimen. autumn berries and foliage colour confirmed that I'd finally unlocked what this plant can do. leggy and open growth habit from insufficient light has been less of a problem since I got the overall conditions right. If your Rose of Sharon is underwhelming, look at pruning at the right time of year for the specific species first.
