Overrated for ease, underrated for beauty — Rose of Sharon

People describe Rose of Sharon as easy and I'd push back on that slightly. pruning at the right time of year for the specific species needs consistent attention and box blight and box moth caterpillar on Buxus species can undermine progress quickly if ignored.

Where Rose of Sharon is genuinely underrated is the beauty. multi-season interest from flowers, berries, bark, and autumn colour is extraordinary when you see it in person. I display it in a low-maintenance foundation planting around a house and it gets comments from everyone who sees it. winter bark and evergreen foliage interest is the time to really understand what this plant offers. Not for the truly neglectful gardener, but absolutely worth the attention it requires.
