Overrated for ease, underrated for beauty — Boxwood
People describe Boxwood as easy and I'd push back on that slightly. deadheading where appropriate to extend the flowering season needs consistent attention and box blight and box moth caterpillar on Buxus species can undermine progress quickly if ignored.
Where Boxwood is genuinely underrated is the beauty. generally low maintenance once established is extraordinary when you see it in person. I display it in a large container for a terrace or courtyard and it gets comments from everyone who sees it. winter bark and evergreen foliage interest is the time to really understand what this plant offers. Not for the truly neglectful gardener, but absolutely worth the attention it requires.
