Overrated for ease, underrated for beauty — Pygmy Date Palm
People describe Pygmy Date Palm as easy and I'd push back on that slightly. feeding with a palm-specific slow-release fertiliser in spring needs consistent attention and crown damage and death in severe or prolonged frost can undermine progress quickly if ignored.
Where Pygmy Date Palm is genuinely underrated is the beauty. remarkable toughness once properly established is extraordinary when you see it in person. I display it in a Mediterranean or exotic themed garden border and it gets comments from everyone who sees it. new frond production visible in spring and early summer is the time to really understand what this plant offers. Not for the truly neglectful gardener, but absolutely worth the attention it requires.
