Started Date Palm at the wrong time — lessons learned
I planted Date Palm at entirely the wrong point in the growing calendar and spent the first few months wondering what I'd done wrong. slow recovery from transplant shock when moved as large specimens didn't help matters. Once I understood wrapping the crown with fleece in winter for borderline hardy species things improved substantially.
long-lived structure that becomes more impressive over decades is what makes this plant worth persisting with. In a poolside or coastal garden planting it finally looks as good as I'd imagined. cold weather protection needed in winter for tender varieties redeemed the whole effort. If you're starting out: do your timing research before you plant.
