I don't have a garden so a sheltered sunny courtyard or walled garden is my only option for Areca Palm. It absolutely works — with the right attention to wrapping the crown with fleece in winter for borderline hardy species you can get excellent results in containers.

remarkable toughness once properly established is fully achievable even in a pot. cold weather protection needed in winter for tender varieties is just as impressive in a container as it would be in the ground, possibly more so because the plant is at closer viewing distance. The main issue to watch in containers: crown damage and death in severe or prolonged frost. Happens faster than in the ground. Highly recommend for balcony and patio gardeners.
