Three things I wish someone had told me before growing Zygopetalum
After growing Zygopetalum for over a year here is what I'd tell a beginner.
First: feeding with a half-strength orchid fertiliser weekly in summer is not optional — it's the foundation everything else depends on. Second: aerial root desiccation in dry centrally heated rooms will happen and you should know how to handle it before it does. Third: a conservatory shelf with filtered light genuinely matters — the right position unlocks wide hybridisation resulting in an almost unlimited colour range in a way a poor position never will. peak bloom display through winter and spring is the payoff for getting all of this right. It's worth every bit of effort.
