Good plant, mediocre results — what went wrong with my Oncidium
Oncidium is clearly a great plant — I can see that from other people's results. Mine has been decent but not spectacular, and I think I know why.
I underestimated the importance of watering by soaking the pot then letting it drain fully in the early stages and paid for it. failure to rebloom withou…

Started Oncidium at the wrong time — lessons learned
I planted Oncidium at entirely the wrong point in the growing calendar and spent the first few months wondering what I'd done wrong. crown rot from water sitting in the leaf crown didn't help matters. Once I understood feeding with a half-strength orchid fertiliser weekly in summer things improved s…

Struggling with Oncidium — would appreciate advice
I want to be honest: I'm not getting great results with Oncidium and I'm not entirely sure why. scale insects on pseudobulbs and undersides of leaves has been a recurring problem despite my attempts to address it. I've been focusing on feeding with a half-strength orchid fertiliser weekly in summer …

Overrated for ease, underrated for beauty — Oncidium
People describe Oncidium as easy and I'd push back on that slightly. providing bright indirect light away from direct afternoon sun needs consistent attention and scale insects on pseudobulbs and undersides of leaves can undermine progress quickly if ignored.

Oncidium seasonal highlights — a year in review
I've been growing Oncidium for a full year now and want to capture what each season offered. repotting best done just after flowering finishes was the clear high point — everything you're told about Oncidium at that time of year is true. I started with one Oncidium and now have four, all from propagation. The process is straightforward once you understand feeding with a half-strength orchid fertiliser weekly in summer — something I picked up from trial and error rather than any guide.
I display them in a conservatory shelf with fil…

Honest review: Oncidium is rewarding but aerial root desiccation in dry centrally heated rooms is real
Oncidium is a genuinely satisfying plant to grow, but I want to be upfront about one thing: aerial root desiccation in dry centrally heated rooms. I've dealt with it twice now and it takes consistent attention to manage.
Beyond that, pseudobulbs that store water and nutrients makes it one of my fav…

Six months with Oncidium — what I actually learned
I brought Oncidium home six months ago with high hopes and almost no knowledge. The first challenge was understanding watering by soaking the pot then letting it drain fully — something I hadn't expected to matter so much. Once I got that right, the whole thing settled down.
I grow it in a north or…

Pest battle with Oncidium — and how I won
I had a serious problem with aerial root desiccation in dry centrally heated rooms on my Oncidium earlier this year. Caught it late and had to work hard to bring the plant back. The experience was frustrating but educational.
Now that it's healthy again I can fully appreciate pseudobulbs that store…
