Started Fig Tree at the wrong time — lessons learned
I planted Fig Tree at entirely the wrong point in the growing calendar and spent the first few months wondering what I'd done wrong. fireblight bacterial disease affecting pears and apples didn't help matters. Once I understood thinning fruitlets in early summer to improve individual fruit size things improved substantially.
blossom spectacle in spring before any other ornamental value is what makes this plant worth persisting with. In a sheltered south or west-facing garden wall as an espalier it finally looks as good as I'd imagined. blossom opening in spring requiring frost protection redeemed the whole effort. If you're starting out: do your timing research before you plant.
