Honest review: Sword Fern is rewarding but root bound stunting in pots left too long without repotting is real
Sword Fern is a genuinely satisfying plant to grow, but I want to be upfront about one thing: root bound stunting in pots left too long without repotting. I've dealt with it twice now and it takes consistent attention to manage.
Beyond that, wide range from compact table plants to large architectural specimens makes it one of my favourites in the collection. I keep it in a fern wall or vertical garden in a shaded courtyard which suits it well. Learning about misting the fronds in dry centrally heated rooms has been essential. early emergence from the soil before most other plants in spring is worth waiting for — the plant really justifies itself then. Four stars because of that persistent issue.
