Beginner success with Sword Fern — here is what helped

As a complete beginner I was nervous about starting with Sword Fern. It turned out to be more forgiving than I expected, as long as I paid attention to maintaining consistent moisture without waterlogging.

I grow mine in a woodland garden understorey planting which is working really well. prehistoric elegance with delicate layered fronds was a genuine surprise — I didn't expect it to look or perform like that. early emergence from the soil before most other plants in spring has been the highlight so far. My biggest mistake early on was ignoring root bound stunting in pots left too long without repotting, which I'd recommend addressing immediately.
