As a complete beginner I was nervous about starting with Staghorn Fern. It turned out to be more forgiving than I expected, as long as I paid attention to removing dead fronds cleanly at the base in spring.

I grow mine in a shaded north-facing border under trees which is working really well. exceptional ability to thrive in deep shade was a genuine surprise — I didn't expect it to look or perform like that. early emergence from the soil before most other plants in spring has been the highlight so far. My biggest mistake early on was ignoring crown death from frost on tender varieties, which I'd recommend addressing immediately.
