I've been growing plants seriously for over fifteen years and Staghorn Fern remains a reliable favourite. For anyone starting out: the most critical thing is positioning in shade or dappled light away from direct sun. Everything else follows from that.

crown death from frost on tender varieties is the challenge that trips up most beginners and some experienced growers too. I've been growing mine in a humid conservatory in a decorative pot for three seasons now and the results are consistently good. wide range from compact table plants to large architectural specimens is what makes it worth coming back to year after year. frond dieback in winter for deciduous species is when I show it off — it earns its place fully then.
