Six months with Ostrich Fern — what I actually learned
I brought Ostrich Fern home six months ago with high hopes and almost no knowledge. The first challenge was understanding removing dead fronds cleanly at the base in spring — something I hadn't expected to matter so much. Once I got that right, the whole thing settled down.
I grow it in a fern wall or vertical garden in a shaded courtyard and the position has been ideal. prehistoric elegance with delicate layered fronds is what keeps drawing me back to it. spectacular new crozier unfurling in spring was the moment that made me glad I persisted through the learning curve. One honest warning: frond browning and crisp tips in dry air caught me off guard in month two. Stay on top of it from the start.
