I don't have a garden so a hanging basket in a cool bathroom is my only option for Boston Fern. It absolutely works — with the right attention to removing dead fronds cleanly at the base in spring you can get excellent results in containers.

exceptional ability to thrive in deep shade is fully achievable even in a pot. frond dieback in winter for deciduous species is just as impressive in a container as it would be in the ground, possibly more so because the plant is at closer viewing distance. The main issue to watch in containers: root bound stunting in pots left too long without repotting. Happens faster than in the ground. Highly recommend for balcony and patio gardeners.
