Beginner success with Organ Pipe Cactus — here is what helped

As a complete beginner I was nervous about starting with Organ Pipe Cactus. It turned out to be more forgiving than I expected, as long as I paid attention to using pure mineral grit for drainage in the soil mix.

I grow mine in a greenhouse or conservatory staging which is working really well. remarkable drought tolerance once established was a genuine surprise — I didn't expect it to look or perform like that. offsetting and pup production in spring has been the highlight so far. My biggest mistake early on was ignoring scarring from cold water splash on the skin, which I'd recommend addressing immediately.
