Beginner success with Barrel Cactus — here is what helped

As a complete beginner I was nervous about starting with Barrel Cactus. It turned out to be more forgiving than I expected, as long as I paid attention to providing the sunniest window or outdoor position available.

I grow mine in a greenhouse or conservatory staging which is working really well. remarkable drought tolerance once established was a genuine surprise — I didn't expect it to look or perform like that. offsetting and pup production in spring has been the highlight so far. My biggest mistake early on was ignoring root rot from any waterlogging in winter, which I'd recommend addressing immediately.
