Beginner success with Crocus — here is what helped
As a complete beginner I was nervous about starting with Crocus. It turned out to be more forgiving than I expected, as long as I paid attention to adding grit to the planting hole in heavy clay soils.
I grow mine in a mixed border with later-emerging perennials to hide dying foliage which is working really well. increasing clump size year on year when well established was a genuine surprise — I didn't expect it to look or perform like that. planting new bulbs in autumn for next year's display has been the highlight so far. My biggest mistake early on was ignoring bulb rot from waterlogging in poorly drained soil, which I'd recommend addressing immediately.
