I don't have a garden so a windbreak planting in an exposed position is my only option for Black Bamboo. It absolutely works — with the right attention to removing the oldest and most congested canes each spring you can get excellent results in containers.

rapid establishment and fast vertical growth is fully achievable even in a pot. best container division and replanting in spring is just as impressive in a container as it would be in the ground, possibly more so because the plant is at closer viewing distance. The main issue to watch in containers: die-back after mass flowering which occurs once per lifetime. Happens faster than in the ground. Highly recommend for balcony and patio gardeners.
