Black Bamboo is a genuinely satisfying plant to grow, but I want to be upfront about one thing: die-back after mass flowering which occurs once per lifetime. I've dealt with it twice now and it takes consistent attention to manage.

Beyond that, beautiful sound of canes moving in wind makes it one of my favourites in the collection. I keep it in a Japanese or contemporary minimalist garden design which suits it well. Learning about installing a root barrier for running bamboo before planting has been essential. best container division and replanting in spring is worth waiting for — the plant really justifies itself then. Four stars because of that persistent issue.
