Started Arrow Bamboo at the wrong time — lessons learned
I planted Arrow Bamboo at entirely the wrong point in the growing calendar and spent the first few months wondering what I'd done wrong. new canes not reaching full height in the first year didn't help matters. Once I understood removing the oldest and most congested canes each spring things improved substantially.
rapid establishment and fast vertical growth is what makes this plant worth persisting with. In a windbreak planting in an exposed position it finally looks as good as I'd imagined. foliage refresh as older leaves shed in late winter redeemed the whole effort. If you're starting out: do your timing research before you plant.
