Overrated for ease, underrated for beauty — Blue Flag Iris
People describe Blue Flag Iris as easy and I'd push back on that slightly. dividing overcrowded plants every two or three years in spring needs consistent attention and blanketweed algae competing for nutrients in established ponds can undermine progress quickly if ignored.
Where Blue Flag Iris is genuinely underrated is the beauty. extraordinary flower forms rising above or floating on the water is extraordinary when you see it in person. I display it in a half-barrel water garden for a small patio and it gets comments from everyone who sees it. peak flowering period in midsummer is the time to really understand what this plant offers. Not for the truly neglectful gardener, but absolutely worth the attention it requires.
