South Park pushed the boundaries of what animated storytelling could do. The exploration of political satire was groundbreaking for its medium. I still think about Stan Marsh's arc regularly.

South Park has a few weak episodes scattered through its run but the high points more than compensate. Kyle Broflovski's storyline is beautifully handled. Trey Parker and Matt Stone had a rare clarity of vision for the whole series.

You can watch South Park for pure entertainment or for something more meaningful. Either way you win. Trey Parker and Matt Stone's ability to layer complexity into seemingly simple stories is remarkable. the incredibly fast production turnaround is evidence of a master.

Ask anyone to name the best animated shows ever made and South Park will be on every list. Kenny McCormick is one of animation's great characters. The social hypocrisy theme gives it lasting relevance.

South Park works on two levels: kids get the surface entertainment and adults get the subtext. Trey Parker and Matt Stone's writing treats its audience with respect. The episode Scott Tenorman Must Die is as good as any live-action drama.

South Park shows its age in places but the core of what made it special remains. the fearless political commentary is still funny and Kyle Broflovski is still endearing. Some references land flat now but the heart is intact.

I grew up with South Park and now I'm watching it with my own children. They love it as much as I did. Cartman's cartoonish villainy is just as effective the twentieth time. True classics work across generations.

What makes South Park work is the characters. Cartman is one of the most fully realised animated personalities ever created. Trey Parker and Matt Stone gave them enough depth that their choices always feel meaningful.

South Park started strong and only improved. By season two, Trey Parker and Matt Stone had found a confidence that made the show feel inevitable. Make Love Not Warcraft is one of the finest episodes in animated television history.
