Changed the way I think about storytelling
Cowboy Bebop took narrative risks that paid off completely. Shinichirō Watanabe's willingness to subvert expectations while honouring its themes makes it genuinely original. The Hard Luck Woman arc is one of the great story arcs in all of fiction.

Cowboy Bebop has one of the great anime soundtracks. The music elevates emotional scenes to something transcendent. Spike's tragic arc is made three times more impactful by the score. Shinichirō Watanabe clearly understood how music and image work together.

Cowboy Bebop isn't just a great anime — it's a great work of fiction full stop. Shinichirō Watanabe's storytelling is dense, emotional, and intellectually rigorous. The theme of the jazz of existence is handled with genuine philosophical depth.

The characters are incredibly well written
Spike Spiegel's development across the series is one of the most convincing character journeys I've experienced. You understand every choice even when you disagree with it. Spike's tragic arc makes the whole thing click.

If someone wants to understand what makes anime special, I recommend Cowboy Bebop first. It demonstrates everything: the visual storytelling, the emotional range, the commitment to character. Yoko Kanno's legendary soundtrack is the best single example.
