Inglourious Basterds (2009)

I didn't expect Inglourious Basterds to affect me so deeply. The way Quentin Tarantino handles language as power is unlike anything I'd seen before. I came out of it looking at the world differently.

I first watched Inglourious Basterds as a teenager and thought it was fine. Rewatched at 30 and it hit completely differently. The revenge fantasy vs historical reality undercurrent makes total sense now in a way it didn't before.

I usually avoid this kind of film but gave Inglourious Basterds a chance after constant recommendations. Completely converted. Quentin Tarantino transcends genre entirely. It works as pure human drama first and everything else second.

There are scenes in cinema you never forget. For me, the cinema fire in Inglourious Basterds is one of them. Quentin Tarantino constructs it with total precision and it lands exactly as intended. Pure craft.

I went into Inglourious Basterds knowing nothing — no trailer, no plot summary. I strongly recommend that approach. The cinema as propaganda hits much harder when you haven't been primed for it. Go in cold.

We watched Inglourious Basterds together and spent an hour talking about revenge fantasy vs historical reality afterward. That kind of conversation doesn't happen often. The film gives you something real to think about together.

Some elements of Inglourious Basterds show their age, but the core of it — cinema as propaganda, the chapter-by-chapter structure — hasn't diminished at all. Films this good age better than almost anything else.
