Underwhelming Fish Ambul Thiyal — expected more

I was looking forward to Fish Ambul Thiyal here based on the reputation. The reality was disappointing. The tangy from goraka and tamarind character that makes this dish special was muted — either from shortcuts with coconut scraped fresh or from scaling up production at the expense of quality.

Maldive fish is a uniquely Sri Lankan ingredient with no close equivalent elsewhere. The a Colombo rice and curry lunch setting I was hoping for wasn't quite there either. ginger beer was available but not suggested appropriately. I've had much better versions elsewhere. Two stars because the dish concept is sound; the execution let it down.
