You can taste history in Koeksisters if you know what to look for. the braai is a cross-cultural South African institution that transcends racial and social divides. The robust and satisfying character reflects those layers — braai wood and coals doesn't appear by accident; it came from a specific tradition.

The a shebeen township tavern setting made sense of it. You understand the food differently when the context is right. Castle Lager alongside is part of that story. Some food is just fuel. Koeksisters, properly made, is something more. This version told the story well.
