You can taste history in Braai if you know what to look for. Cape Malay cuisine reflects the heritage of enslaved people brought from Southeast Asia. The smoky and braaied character reflects those layers — boerewors spice mix doesn't appear by accident; it came from a specific tradition.

The a shebeen township tavern setting made sense of it. You understand the food differently when the context is right. rooibos tea alongside is part of that story. Some food is just fuel. Braai, properly made, is something more. This version told the story well.
