Cultural discovery through Pretzels

Pretzels opened a door into a cuisine I'd previously known almost nothing about. The hearty and deeply savoury flavours are unlike anything in my usual rotation and I mean that positively. German bread culture is extraordinarily diverse with over 300 officially registered varieties. Understanding that context made the dish taste different — richer with meaning.

I learned that dark rye bread is central to this cuisine's character, not just a seasoning. The a Sunday family roast lunch setting was authentic and helpful for understanding what I was eating. Riesling completed the picture. A genuinely educational meal.
