Returned to New Zealand for the third time — keeps getting better
This was my third visit to New Zealand and I keep finding new reasons to return. This time I explored beyond Auckland and discovered a completely different side of the country. Bay of Islands never loses its impact no matter how many times you've seen it.
The food still makes me happy in ways I can…

Good country, exhausting tourist industry
New Zealand is a genuinely beautiful and interesting place. Tongariro Alpine Crossing is worth every superlative thrown at it. The manuka honey is legitimately excellent. very safe and easy to travel gave the trip real depth.
What I struggled with: the tourist infrastructure around the headline sit…

New Zealand in shoulder season — best decision I made
Visited New Zealand in shoulder season deliberately and the decision paid off completely. Hobbiton without peak crowds is a totally different experience. Queenstown felt lived-in rather than touristy. Found a small place doing the best lamb roast I've ever tasted — something that would have been inv…

Disappointed by the tourist experience around Bay of Islands
Bay of Islands in New Zealand is extraordinary — the scale and history hit you immediately. But the experience around it has been thoroughly commercialised. Getting there, navigating the crowds, and dealing with persistent sellers around Queenstown centre made it more stressful than it should be.

Christchurch surprised me completely on this trip to New Zealand
I went to New Zealand with modest expectations and left completely won over, largely thanks to time spent in Christchurch. The city has a pace and character that travel guides undersell. Found a great spot for L&P soft drink on day two and went back every day after that.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing w…

Would not rush back to New Zealand — very expensive was a real issue
I wanted to love New Zealand more than I did. The positives exist: Hobbiton is genuinely impressive, Rotorua has moments of real charm, and manuka honey is as good as people say.
But very expensive was a persistent problem throughout the trip and dragged the experience down. I've heard others say i…

Honest review after 17 days — mostly great, a few gripes
Visited New Zealand for 17 days. The positives are real: Bay of Islands is every bit as impressive as advertised, and the food scene around Christchurch is genuinely excellent — try manuka honey if you haven't. warm Kiwi hospitality was an unexpected bonus.
That said, very expensive. It's not a dea…

Weekend in Wellington, New Zealand — more than I expected from a short trip
Only had a long weekend — about 12 days — in New Zealand, based in Wellington. More than enough to fall for the place. Did Bay of Islands on day one and spent the rest of the time just walking and eating. The manuka honey situation here is no joke — some of the best eating I've done anywhere.

Backpacking through New Zealand on a tight budget — totally doable
Did New Zealand on a shoestring for 5 days and it was absolutely manageable. Based in cheap guesthouses near Auckland centre and ate mostly at local spots — manuka honey from street stalls cost almost nothing and was better than anything in a tourist restaurant.
Bay of Islands has an entry fee but …

The food in New Zealand changed how I think about travel
I travel for food more than anything else, and New Zealand shot straight to the top of my culinary travel list. lamb roast alone justified the flight, but that was just the beginning. The variety and quality in Wellington is relentless — I didn't have a single disappointing meal in 14 days.
Bay of …
