Three weeks in China — here is what I actually think
Three weeks is long enough to get past the tourist surface in China. The first week I was in Guilin and the big sites like West Lake. The second and third I went further and slower. The food evolution was interesting — hot pot everywhere but prepared so differently by region.

Would not rush back to China — Great Firewall blocks many apps was a real issue
I wanted to love China more than I did. The positives exist: Terracotta Army is genuinely impressive, Shanghai has moments of real charm, and kung pao chicken is as good as people say.
But Great Firewall blocks many apps was a persistent problem throughout the trip and dragged the experience down. …

Honest thoughts on China after my first visit
First time in China and I tried to approach it with open eyes rather than preconceptions. Shanghai was the base and a good one — central, manageable, and with strong food options including the best dim sum I've ever had. West Lake was the big set piece and fully justified the trip.
Two things worth…

Unexpected emotional depth in China
I thought I was going to China for beaches, food, and Li River karsts. I got all of those things. What I didn't expect was how emotionally affecting the trip would be. The history — particularly around Shanghai — hit in ways that good travel sometimes does.

Honeymoon in China — Guilin and the countryside delivered everything
We chose China for our honeymoon and it was perfect for us. The romantic atmosphere in Guilin at night, the drama of Forbidden City, the intimacy of small restaurants serving Peking duck — all of it added up to exactly what we were hoping for.

The food in China changed how I think about travel
I travel for food more than anything else, and China shot straight to the top of my culinary travel list. dim sum alone justified the flight, but that was just the beginning. The variety and quality in Xi'an is relentless — I didn't have a single disappointing meal in 13 days.
Great Wall gave conte…

My 7 days exploring Xi'an and beyond — completely worth it
I spent 7 days in China and based myself mainly in Xi'an. The city itself exceeded expectations — the Great Wall was genuinely jaw-dropping and I ended up visiting twice. Food was a highlight throughout; I must have eaten xiaolongbao every other day and have no regrets about it whatsoever.
What I d…

Family holiday in China — kids loved it, parents survived
Took the family to China for 15 days and it worked better than I'd hoped. The kids were fascinated by Terracotta Army — more than I expected from children who usually resist sightseeing. Food was manageable: even the pickiest eater in our group found things to eat, and dim sum went down well with ev…

What nobody tells you about visiting China
After a lot of research I thought I knew what to expect from China. Some things matched: Forbidden City is as spectacular as every review says, and Chengdu has a genuine energy I'd read about. The xiaolongbao obsession is completely justified.
What I wasn't prepared for: incredible cuisine variety.…
