The people of Belgium are the real highlight
I've been to a lot of countries and the thing I'll remember most about Belgium isn't Grand Place Brussels or even the extraordinary Belgian chocolate — it's the people. In Ghent and out in the countryside, I encountered a warmth and generosity that felt completely genuine.

Honest thoughts on Belgium after my first visit
First time in Belgium and I tried to approach it with open eyes rather than preconceptions. Antwerp was the base and a good one — central, manageable, and with strong food options including the best Belgian ales I've ever had. Atomium was the big set piece and fully justified the trip.
Two things w…

Bruges surprised me completely on this trip to Belgium
I went to Belgium with modest expectations and left completely won over, largely thanks to time spent in Bruges. The city has a pace and character that travel guides undersell. Found a great spot for stomp on day two and went back every day after that.
Manneken Pis was the big planned experience an…

Belgium in shoulder season — best decision I made
Visited Belgium in shoulder season deliberately and the decision paid off completely. Grand Place Brussels without peak crowds is a totally different experience. Bruges felt lived-in rather than touristy. Found a small place doing the best Belgian chocolate I've ever tasted — something that would ha…

Photography trip to Belgium — every frame a gift
I came to Belgium specifically for photography and the country delivered material at every turn. Manneken Pis at dawn was everything I'd hoped. Bruges's streets at dusk are an endless source of light and texture. The people, once comfortable with a camera, are extraordinary subjects.

But Bruges can feel like a theme park in peak season was more of a problem than…

Would not rush back to Belgium — Bruges can feel like a theme park in peak season was a real issue
I wanted to love Belgium more than I did. The positives exist: Bruges Belfry is genuinely impressive, Liège has moments of real charm, and Belgian ales is as good as people say.
But Bruges can feel like a theme park in peak season was a persistent problem throughout the trip and dragged the experie…

Solo trip to Belgium: everything you need to know
Did 17 days solo in Belgium and found it extremely manageable as a solo traveller. The transport network around Brussels is decent and getting to Atomium independently was straightforward. Met fellow travellers easily and locals were generally happy to chat.

Honest review after 8 days — mostly great, a few gripes
Visited Belgium for 8 days. The positives are real: Bruges Belfry is every bit as impressive as advertised, and the food scene around Liège is genuinely excellent — try moules-frites if you haven't. magnificent medieval city centres was an unexpected bonus.
That said, Bruges can feel like a theme p…

My 9 days exploring Bruges and beyond — completely worth it
I spent 9 days in Belgium and based myself mainly in Bruges. The city itself exceeded expectations — the Atomium was genuinely jaw-dropping and I ended up visiting twice. Food was a highlight throughout; I must have eaten stomp every other day and have no regrets about it whatsoever.
What I didn't …
