Laminitis management is critical
Shetland ponies are highly prone to laminitis and diet management is non-negotiable. My pony must have restricted grazing (strip grazing in spring and summer), no hard feed, and regular farrier visits. When managed correctly he's been sound and healthy for 15 years. One owner before me let him overgraze and he suffered a serious laminitis episode. Learn the dietary requirements before getting a Shetland — it's not difficult but it's essential.
