The Shih Tzu was bred as a royal companion in Imperial China, and the breed has maintained an air of dignified self-possession ever since. Despite their elegant appearance, Shih Tzus are sturdy, playful, and surprisingly adaptable. They are equally at home in a city apartment or a suburban house, and their low exercise needs and friendly temperament make them an excellent choice for older or less active owners.

Pros

  • Affectionate, gentle, and ideal companion for quieter households
  • Low exercise requirements — suited to apartment life
  • Friendly and sociable with adults, older children, and other pets
  • Adaptable to various environments and routines
  • Generally long-lived — often 10–16 years

Cons

  • Requires daily facial cleaning and regular coat maintenance
  • Flat face (brachycephalic) causes overheating and breathing issues in heat
  • Can be difficult to housetrain
  • Prone to eye problems due to large, prominent eyes

Excellent with children and elderly people alike

My mother has a Shih Tzu and my children adore him. He's patient with young children and gentle with my elderly mother. He adjusts his behaviour instinctively — calmer with her, livelier with the kids. This adaptability within the family is remarkable. He seems genuinely attuned to what different pe…

Friendly with strangers and other dogs

Properly socialised Shih Tzus are wonderfully social dogs. Mine walks up to everyone she meets and cheerfully accepts all friendly attention. With other dogs she's enthusiastic and appropriate in scale — she's small enough that even big dogs tolerate her polite approaches. I can take her anywhere co…

Good health with proper care

Shih Tzus have some health vulnerabilities related to their brachycephalic structure and small size. With good breeding, proper diet, and regular vet care, they live 10-16 years and generally do well. Mine is nine and still healthy and active. The eyes need cleaning regularly and teeth need daily at…

Not a very active dog, if that matters to you

If you want a running or hiking companion, the Shih Tzu is not your dog. Mine is perfectly content with two short walks and indoor play. This is ideal for my lifestyle but I know active dog owners who've been disappointed. Be honest about what you want from a dog before committing to any breed.

A companion in the truest sense

My Shih Tzu has been with me through a move, a job change, and a relationship ending. Through all of it she has been a consistent, warm, uncomplicated presence. She asks for very little and gives a lot. I think of her less as a pet and more as a steady companion who happens to need walking and groom…

Beautiful coat, real grooming commitment

The Shih Tzu coat is genuinely beautiful — luxurious, silky, and striking in a long cut. But it is a real commitment. Daily brushing for long coats; professional grooming every 6-8 weeks for most owners. I keep my girl in a puppy cut which is much more practical and still adorable. Know which lifest…

Apartment-perfect and adaptable

If you live in a flat and want a dog, the Shih Tzu is a top contender. Low exercise requirements (two short daily walks is sufficient), calm demeanour, and perfectly sized for smaller spaces. Mine never barks at neighbours, doesn't require a garden, and travels easily. A genuinely practical dog for …

The flat face causes some issues

Shih Tzus are brachycephalic and this affects their health. My boy overheats more easily than long-nosed breeds, snores loudly, and occasionally has episodes of reverse sneezing. He's healthy overall but needs monitoring in hot weather and after exercise. I keep him cool in summer and avoid vigorous…

Royal origins, regal personality to match

The Shih Tzu was bred for Chinese royalty and mine has clearly not forgotten this. He accepts grooming as his due, positions himself on the best furniture as a matter of right, and expects meals served with appropriate promptness. He's genuinely affectionate and funny about it. If you want a dog wit…

The perfect gentle companion

My Shih Tzu is the gentlest dog I have ever owned. She's never snapped at anyone, never been destructive, and adapts calmly to changes in routine. She loves being held, loves being brushed, and loves napping on my lap. For someone who wants a devoted, uncomplicated companion who is simply happy to b…
