The Jack Russell Terrier is a small but fearless working terrier originally developed for fox hunting in England. Tenacious, energetic, and full of personality, Jack Russells are intelligent and entertaining companions who think themselves considerably larger than they actually are. They need firm, consistent handling and plenty of mental and physical stimulation to prevent boredom-related mischief.

Pros

  • Lively, entertaining, and full of character
  • Intelligent and quick to learn
  • Low grooming maintenance
  • Robust health and long lifespan

Cons

  • Very high energy for their size
  • Strong prey drive, unreliable off-leash
  • Can be stubborn and opinionated
  • Prone to excessive barking

Best farm dog for small game

I have a smallholding and my Jack Russell is indispensable. He has cleared my outbuildings of rats completely and does a daily patrol that keeps the mice population minimal. He works independently and effectively, exactly as the breed was designed. He comes inside in the evenings and is a calm, affe…

Tiny but magnificent

My JRT is nine years old and still acts like a puppy. She runs, leaps, investigates, and demands engagement with an energy that puts younger dogs to shame. She is smart as a whip and has figured out how to open kitchen cabinets. She learned her commands quickly but applies them only when it suits he…

Great with kids who match his energy

My Jack Russell and my eight-year-old son are perfectly matched energy-wise. They run each other ragged in the garden for hours and both come inside equally exhausted. He is patient with my son within the context of play but he does not like being disturbed when he is napping and will growl a warnin…

Long-lived and healthy

My Jack Russell is fourteen years old and still going strong. He has slowed somewhat but he still wants a walk every day, still bosses the cat around, and still has opinions about everything. The longevity of this breed is remarkable. He has been my companion for fourteen years and I am hoping for a…

Needs more than I could give

My Jack Russell was the most demanding dog I have owned despite being the smallest. His energy and need for stimulation exceeded what I could consistently provide. He became destructive when bored and loud when frustrated. We rehomed him to a family with children and land and he is thriving there. I…

Twelve pounds of pure chaos and joy

My Jack Russell Terrier is the most entertaining animal I have ever owned. He has the energy of a dog five times his size, the confidence of a dog ten times his size, and the stubbornness of a dog that does not care about sizes at all. He has learned every command I have taught him and chooses to fo…

Fearless and funny

There is no more entertaining dog on earth than a Jack Russell Terrier. Mine is convinced he can intimidate my neighbour's Rottweiler and I have to respectfully disagree each time they meet. He is bold, opinionated, and hilariously confident in himself. He is also surprisingly affectionate, curling …

The perfect character dog

I have owned labs, retrievers, and spaniels and my Jack Russell has more personality than all of them combined. She is determined, clever, and completely unimpressed by commands she finds inconvenient. She has a way of looking at me when I ask her to do something she disagrees with that communicates…
