Best dog for apartment living

I was worried a dog this size might struggle in my flat but my Basset has adapted perfectly. He gets two walks a day and is completely content to rest otherwise. He is quiet indoors, gentle with my elderly mother who visits often, and loves cuddles on the sofa. He has never been destructive. The only expense is food because he will eat absolutely anything and everything without stopping.
