Despite the name, the Australian Shepherd was developed in the American West as a versatile ranch and herding dog. The Aussie combines outstanding intelligence, athletic ability, and a striking appearance — often featuring the distinctive merle coat and heterochromia. They are devoted, energetic, and endlessly eager to work, making them a top choice for dog sports and active families.

Pros

  • Highly intelligent and exceptionally trainable
  • Athletic and versatile — excellent for agility, herding, and frisbee
  • Deeply loyal and devoted to their family
  • Striking appearance — merle coats and striking eye colours
  • Adaptable to various working and sporting roles

Cons

  • Very high energy — needs 1.5–2 hours of vigorous exercise daily
  • Strong velcro tendency — can develop separation anxiety
  • Herding instinct may emerge with children or other animals
  • Known genetic health conditions: MDR1 gene mutation, eye anomaly — test breeders

The merle coat is magnificent

Blue merle, red merle, black tri, red tri — the variety of Aussie coat patterns is beautiful and our black bi has the most lustrous coat I've seen on a working breed. It requires regular brushing during shedding season but stays clean and tangle-free otherwise. The investment in appearance is propor…

Healthy and athletic

Our Aussie is six and in excellent health — supple joints, healthy weight, bright eyes. We feed her well, exercise her properly, and do regular vet checks. The breed has some known health predispositions but with responsible breeding and good care, they're wonderfully robust dogs. She shows no signs…

Herding instinct needs management

The herding instinct manifests in Australian Shepherds sometimes as nipping or circling behaviour. My girl went through a phase of herding my kids at high speed until we worked with a trainer on redirecting the instinct into structured play. Now it expresses in fetch and agility instead of family ma…

Best dog I have ever had, full stop

I've owned German Shepherds, Labradors, and mixed breeds over 30 years. My Australian Shepherd is, by some margin, the most engaged, intelligent, and rewarding companion I've had. She's changed the way I think about dogs entirely. Every day with her is genuinely interesting and I feel lucky to have …

Natural with children

My Aussie seems to have an innate understanding of children — how to move around them, when to be gentle, how to play without overwhelming small kids. Our three-year-old and the dog are inseparable. She moderates herself around him without training, which has impressed me. Apparently this gentle ins…

Velcro dog — not for everyone

My Australian Shepherd needs to be with me constantly. She follows me from room to room, gets anxious when I close doors between us, and protests audibly when separated. This attachment is touching but can feel overwhelming. She's also not fond of being alone. I work from home which works perfectly;…

Agility training changed everything

We started agility classes as a way to tire out an energetic puppy. Three years later my Aussie competes regionally and we both live for those weekend trials. The physical challenge, the teamwork, the community — it's transformed how I spend my free time and deepened the bond with my dog in ways I d…

The perfect working partner and family dog

My Australian Shepherd does everything: agility, frisbee, hiking, family life with young kids, and the occasional stint of actual sheep herding on a friend's farm. She's versatile, enthusiastic, and tireless. At home she's calm and loving. Outside she becomes an athlete. The range of this breed is e…

Gorgeous eyes, incredible intelligence

The merle coat and marble eyes stop people in their tracks on every walk. But what I love most is the brain behind those eyes. My Aussie solves puzzle toys in minutes, has learned well over 50 commands, and has an intuitive ability to read my emotions and respond accordingly. A deeply intelligent, s…

Energetic but trainable

Australian Shepherds have enormous energy but unlike some high-drive breeds, they channel it cooperatively when trained well. Mine is enthusiastic about every command and genuinely wants to get things right. The energy is real — two hours minimum exercise daily — but the willingness to work makes li…
