Great Maine Coon experience — just go in with realistic expectations

My Maine Coon Leo is 4 years old now and has been a wonderful companion. The breed lives up to its reputation: great with kids and dogs. I particularly love that chirps instead of meows.

My one knock is that hypertrophic cardiomyopathy risk. I underestimated this when I first got he. Also, significant grooming needs is something you need to plan for. It's not a dealbreaker but requires commitment.

On the health front, polycystic kidney disease. Budget for that and you'll be fine. Four solid stars — would recommend to the right owner who knows what they're getting into.
