The Devon Rex is one of the most distinctive cat breeds in the world, with its huge ears, prominent cheekbones, and short wavy coat giving it an unmistakably elfin, slightly alien appearance. Developed in Devon, England in the 1960s from a spontaneous mutation, the Devon Rex is an irresistibly mischievous, acrobatic, and affectionate cat that bonds closely with its family and treats every day as a performance opportunity.

Pros

  • Unique and striking appearance — bat-eared and wavy-coated
  • Extremely affectionate and bonds intensely with family
  • Low-shedding coat — well-tolerated by many allergy sufferers
  • Highly playful and entertaining throughout life
  • Social and confident with strangers

Cons

  • Thin coat offers poor insulation — needs warm environments in colder climates
  • Ears accumulate wax quickly and need regular cleaning
  • Higher metabolic rate means they eat more than similarly-sized cats
  • Can be mischievous and get into things if not given adequate enrichment

Compact but high energy

Don't let the small size fool you. Devon Rex have the energy density of a supernova. My girl runs circuits around the apartment at top speed for twenty minutes every evening and then collapses dramatically. Make sure you have vertical space — cat trees, shelves — because they love to climb and surve…

Not for people who want quiet cats

My Devon Rex talks. Not like a Siamese, not constantly, but she has opinions and she shares them. She chirps when she wants food, trills when she's happy, and makes a very specific frustrated sound when I close doors she wanted to be on the other side of. I love it but my partner finds it a lot.

Stole my heart from day one

I went to see Devon Rex kittens 'just to look.' I came home with one. She immediately climbed into my collar and fell asleep. That was three years ago. She sleeps on my pillow, eats breakfast with me, and has somehow learned that 'bedtime' means we both go to the bedroom. I was not a cat person befo…

Loves warmth above all else

My Devon Rex seeks out every warm spot in the house — sunny patches, laptop keyboards, the top of the cable box, my neck at 3am. He runs slightly hotter than other cats and seems to actively seek heat sources. In winter this is a benefit since he becomes a purring hot water bottle. In summer, less s…

The coat requires more care than expected

I assumed the short wavy coat would be low maintenance. It is, mostly — but Devon Rex skin can get oily and they need an occasional wipe-down, and sometimes their ears build up wax faster than other breeds. Nothing dramatic, just unexpected. The personality more than compensates but new owners shoul…

My shadow, my comedian, my best friend

Three years with my Devon Rex and I cannot imagine life without her. She's memorized my schedule, waits by the door when I'm due home, and has learned that sitting on my book is the fastest way to get attention. She's never destructive, always social, and has never once bitten or scratched in anger.…

Great with other pets

Our Devon was introduced to an existing dog and older cat and handled both with remarkable ease. She copied the dog's habits within a week and now they sleep in a pile. The older cat took longer to accept her but the Devon's cheerful persistence paid off. She treats everyone as a potential playmate.…

Perfect for allergy sufferers

I spent years thinking I could never have a cat because of my allergies. Devon Rex changed everything. Their short, curly coat sheds minimally and I've had zero allergic reactions in two years of ownership. Plus, they're the most interactive cats I've ever encountered — our girl follows conversation…

Mischievous genius, handle with humor

You need a sense of humor to live with a Devon Rex. Mine has opened childproof cupboards, unraveled an entire roll of paper towels, and once redistributed the contents of my laundry basket across three rooms. He's not malicious — he's just endlessly curious and clever. Once you cat-proof properly, h…

An alien creature, in the best possible way

I describe my Devon Rex to people as a bat-eared, oversized cricket with a purr. He looks completely improbable — huge ears, enormous eyes, tiny wavy coat — and acts accordingly. He does backflips off the sofa, steals food off plates with surgical precision, and then curls up under your chin radiati…
